[ANR] Emilie Marty - Tune-Text Adjustment in French and its Implications for the Interpretation of Intonation

Abstract

This project investigates how the melody of speech (intonation) interacts with the sounds and words we use to convey meaning. By combining speech production and perception experiments, we aim at exploring if the space given by the length and structure of words influence the way intonation patterns are produced, or conversely, if speakers adapt the pronunciation of words to produce a particular intonation pattern when more space is needed to do it correctly. The project will evaluate these adaptations through the lens of a comparison between Southern and non-Southern varieties of French, and by looking at how speech disfluencies impact intonation. Its findings could contribute to updating our understanding of French intonation patterns and their meaning, with potential applications in speech technologies, language teaching, and the study of language disorders.
