Using virtual reality in audiological training: Our experience in 22 otolaryngology residents

Abstract

  • The French National Authority for Health requires competency to be demonstrated before students are allowed to interact with human patients or volunteers.
  • We developed a virtual reality (VR) system that simulates the clinical environment to train otolaryngology students.
  • The VR training system was evaluated by expert educators and otolaryngology students.
  • The mean rating by expert educators was 4.4/5 (±0.3), indicating satisfactory validity; student examination scores significantly improved after completing the VR training (P  < .0001).
  • Further development of VR and augmented reality (AR) training systems may address the important need to establish competency and supplement traditional training for otolaryngology students.
