Using virtual reality in audiological training: Our experience in 22 otolaryngology residents
Abstract
The French National Authority for Health requires competency to be demonstrated before students are allowed to interact with human patients or volunteers.
We developed a virtual reality (VR) system that simulates the clinical environment to train otolaryngology students.
The VR training system was evaluated by expert educators and otolaryngology students.
The mean rating by expert educators was 4.4/5 (±0.3), indicating satisfactory validity; student examination scores significantly improved after completing the VR training (P < .0001).
Further development of VR and augmented reality (AR) training systems may address the important need to establish competency and supplement traditional training for otolaryngology students.
