Development of a fluid dynamic model for quantitative contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging: Validation for the assessment of uteroplacental perfusion


Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is a non-invasive imaging technique that has been used extensively in blood perfusion imaging of various organs. This modality is based on the acoustic detection of gas-filled microbubbles contrast agents used as intravascular flow tracers. CEUS is in particular a promising imaging modality to monitor and to assess the placental pathophysiology and perfusion. However, to achieve this objective, computer tools are required for the spatio-temporal and quantitative assessment of uteroplacental perfusion.
In this study, a new kinetic analysis is proposed to quantify the bolus arrival from dynamic CEUS (DCEUS). The efficiency of proposed methodology is evaluated both in-vitro, for the quantitative evaluation of microbubble flow rates, and in-vivo, for the classification of placental insufficiency (control vs. ligature) of pregnant rats, from DCEUS. The proposed methodology is a step toward the clinical diagnostic of uteroplacenta pathology in patients.
